SpaceX’s IPO Signals the End of Elon’s Private Ideology

Elon Musk’s decision to take SpaceX public marks a shift from founder philosophy to infrastructure reality. For years, Musk resisted public markets on principle, preferring operational control. The IPO signals something more consequential: SpaceX has become too central to both commercial and national infrastructure to remain a private company. Data centers need reliable bandwidth at scale. The real story isn’t about Musk’s ideology changing. It’s that SpaceX has crossed the threshold where its value to the AI economy outweighs the founder’s desire for autonomy. As cloud providers and AI chip makers compete for edge, latency, and power density advantages, satellite infrastructure becomes a competitive moat. Morgan Stanley will price what a dedicated satellite network for data center connectivity is worth. That number probably justifies the IPO friction Musk has long avoided.

This sets a pattern: companies that control infrastructure layers required for AI compute are becoming too strategically important to remain private. Others will follow. The consolidation of physical infrastructure around compute demand is accelerating.


The Nvidia Royalty Trap Nobody Wanted

The 25% US government take on Nvidia chip sales to domestic entities is backfiring in ways Trump’s team probably didn’t anticipate. The proposal attempts to fund domestic AI infrastructure investment through a revenue share, but economists across the spectrum say it’s the wrong lever in the wrong place. It discourages US companies from buying US chips, creates arbitrage opportunities for grey-market imports, and opens the door for China to demand reciprocal access to restricted technology in exchange for market access.

The unstated logic is clear: the US government sees chip scarcity as the constraint it can control, so it’s trying to extract value from that bottleneck. But this assumes other countries won’t also see the same bottleneck and act accordingly. China could tomorrow propose that any Nvidia shipments to China include a licensing fee that funds Chinese chip development. The precedent Trump is setting doesn’t protect American dominance. It legitimizes competition for control of the infrastructure layer.

What this really exposes is the administration’s conflation of military security with economic advantage. Restricting Nvidia access to China is justifiable as defense policy. Taxing Nvidia sales domestically is venture capital policy wearing a security mask. The two require different justifications, and mixing them corrodes the legitimacy of both.


India’s proposal to establish a government-managed royalty system for AI training data represents the first attempt by a major market to price the previously free labor of human creativity. The Committee on Generative AI and Copyright suggests a three-part system: blanket licenses for training, royalties paid only upon commercialization, and a centralized collection mechanism administered by rightsholders.

This is economically significant because it establishes a middle path between Silicon Valley’s “training is fair use” position and creative industries’ “we should have negotiated these rights individually” position. By deferring royalties until revenue generation, it doesn’t block startup innovation. By centralizing collection, it avoids the transaction costs that make per-creator licensing infeasible. By having rightsholders administer it, it reduces moral hazard.

The real implication: India just proposed the template every other large market will eventually copy. The US resisted this. Europe is moving toward it. Now India, sitting at 1.4 billion people and rapidly becoming a critical AI market, is standardizing it. Any AI company that wants access to Indian talent, Indian data, and Indian markets will need to function within this framework. This doesn’t stay in India. It becomes the baseline expectation globally within three years.
